Why this KOLAVERI DI?!

‘Why this Kolaveri di?’, a north Indian friend asked me what is meaning of Kolaveri?????

He has another barrage of questions. Is it a Tamil song? (Tanglish has obviously confused him.) And a whole lot of things about Dhanush and his lineage (for one, about the fact that he is the superstar Rajini’s son in law). That besides, he loved the song. He only has one gripe. He can’t download the song because the only thing available is the video version that is being shared like a zillion times over and over again. But the media is being generous enough to force that song down his throat at least a few times a day. He gets his dose. Curiously, another one of my friends said she hated it. Only to throw in the towel a little later – be it the bombardment of the song on her from all angles or just the catchiness of it. She confessed to me that ‘she can’t stop humming it.’
But then, everybody loves it. Don’t they? Kolaveri stole the limelight from right,A Wikipedia entry, more than 11 million views in Youtube and the same amount of shares in Facebook, trending topic on Twitter for many days and even an MTV premiere (a first for MTV that has never telecast Tamil songs before), Dhanush couldn’t have asked for more ways to promote his movie 3.

The last we heard a Tamil song go viral (all over India) was Vijay’s Appadi Podu for the movie Gilli (talking of which, the Appadi Podu song is recently officially acquired by Sonu Sood to be featured in his production venture and Vidyasagar is composing the tune for Hindi). That happened before the advent of Facebook and other social networking sites so the success was sort of muted unlike Kolaveri.

When we were all convinced and delighted about his acting histrionics or rather his natural performance, he brings out a few more magical tricks from his already ornamented beret. Yes, I am talking about his latest feat of turning a lyricist and a singer in brother Selvaraghavan’s Mayakkam Enna and spouse Aishwarya’s 3.

In Mayakkam Enna, the simplicity and the profundity of sentiments that are being conveyed are brilliantly simple. The lyrics instantly connect with the listeners. The expression of emotions in films is generally accomplished by lyrical prowess which when thought about makes you wonder if we all convey our feelings in such a poetic fashion in real life. Of course, it is a reel world which is far from real world and is meant to be like that.

But lines as uncomplicated as olagame speed aa odi pogudu; en vandi panchar aayi nikkudhu and fuse pona pin bulb kana switch ah theduren have high levels of relatability and understandability which are a sure shot recipe for popularity.

With all these features going strongly in his favor, he is undoubtedly an indomitable force to be reckoned with and here is wishing his kolaveri of fruitful accomplishments to continue.

iRemember............

Do India got an "Apple Store",the Answer is "NO" (stores we have are re-sellers).Apple products in the country are ‘insanely' overpriced and most of us don't own an Apple product, yet we can feel a personal loss on his death.

The Public reaction in India has seen by jobs Stanford speech (youtube 1lakh hits).

So much has been written about the genius whom we know so little. People like Steve are born one in a generation, and carry an aura with universal appeal. He may be dead now, but a part of him will live on through the invention he passed on to humanity, and Steve himself will live on through the inspiration he fills in the hearts of millions of his fans.

Critics say he was a ruthless boss. The best trait of great leaders is their ability to extract the best out of others, Steve exemplifies exactly that. Another remarkable thing was his professionalism. When Steve returned to an Apple in tatters, he went in for a major revamp. At the Boston MacWorld conference 1997, in his trademark spell-bounding ‘Stevenote,' Jobs surprised everyone when Bill Gates popped up on the giant screen, announcing Microsoft's collaboration with Apple. Many ridiculed him for that, but 14 years hence, you can't help but revel at his strategy. Steve knew Apple had to rise slowly and steadily, his partnership with Microsoft helped Mac Computers, which used Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, and other Microsoft features, until Apple engineers developed platforms like Pages, and Safari which, of course, outperform the Microsoft counterparts.

Who is Bodhidharma? யார் இந்த போதிதர்மன்?

" 7am Arivu " the forthcoming adventure Tamil  film, created a hype of " who is Bodhidharma".

Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th/6th century, he was a Tamil prince from southern India's Pallava Empire. Scholars have concluded his place of birth to be Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu.

Bodhidharma was very intelligent and was the favorite son of the king of India. Bodhidharma had two older brothers who feared that their father, the king, would pass them over and bequeath the kingship to Bodhidharma. In their jealousy, the two older brothers often disparaged Bodhidharma while talking with their father, hoping to turn him against their younger brother. The older brothers also attempted to assassinate Bodhidharma but Bodhidharma had very good karma and so the attempts were not successful. Despite being the favorite son of the king, Bodhidharma realized that he was not interested in a life of politics. He chose instead to study with the famous Buddhist master Prajnatara and become a Buddhist monk.

Bodhidharma trained with his master for many years. One day he asked his master, "Master, when you pass away, where should I go? What should I do?" His master replied that he should go to Zhen Dan, which was the name for China at that time. Years later, Bodhidharma's master passed away and Bodhidharma prepared to leave for China.
During the many years that Bodhidharma had studied as a monk, one of his older brothers had become king of India and that older brother's son had become king after him. The king of India was very fond of his uncle and wanted to make amends for the actions which Bodhidharma's older brothers had taken against him. He asked Bodhidharma to stay near the capital, where he could protect and care for him, but Bodhidharma knew that he must go to China as his master had said.

The Above is short Synopsis of Suriya's  " 7am Arivu " Let's wait and watch what will be the magic on screen.......

ENGEYUM EPPODHUM - A GEM OF TAMIL MOVIE

Whenever we read or hear about an accident on road, we would be jolted by momentary shock and sorrow. But, ultimately, we would move on from the grief. In Engeyum Eppodhum, Director Saravanan has tried to show us the unbearable pain suffered by the kith and kin of the victims of an accident. The film will surely make people look beyond the crashed vehicle and shattered glass pieces when they witness an accident.

The film begins with a massive head-on crash between two buses at a National Highway near Villupuram. The flashback introduces the two lead pairs to us. Amudha (Ananya) comes to Chennai from Trichy for attending an interview. As her cousin sister could not pick her up due to unforeseen circumstances, a stranger Gautham (Sharvanand) helps her out to attend her interview and he accompanies her till she reaches her cousin sister. Amudha goes back to Trichy soon after.

On the other hand, Kathiresan (Jai) falls for Manimegalai (Anjali) in Trichy. Kathiresan and Manimegalai board a bus to go to Chennai to meet Kathiresan’s parents. Slowly, love blossoms between Amudha and Gautham and they decide to go in search of each other. Then, a striking climax follows which changes the life of many people forever.

Ananya as an innocent and suspicious girl is brilliant in her role. She is simple yet elegant throughout the film. Sharvanand has given a very stylish performance and is quite apt for the role. Jai as a soft spoken guy has essayed his role effortlessly and Anjali as a dominative girl has given her best and she steals the show in the climax.
The major highlight of the film is the fresh and appealing screenplay. The love scenes between both the lead pairs are soulful. The movie has no dull moment and it keeps you engrossed throughout. The realistic portrayal of all the characters in the film is a major plus for the film.

Music Director Sathya’s background score brings the desired mood and among songs, ‘Govindha Govindha’ and ‘Maasama’ songs linger in your mind for a long time. Velraj’s cinematography is slick. Debutant Director Saravanan has delivered a commendable film which is not only entertaining but also gives out a much needed social message to the public.

Engeyum Eppodhum is a novel attempt by the director and the compelling screenplay with a strong message to everyone makes it a must watch movie.

MY FIVE.......

My Five is about my personal list of the five greatest feature films in World cinema categories.

1. Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) (1988)

Cinema Paradiso offers a nostalgic look at films and the effect they have on a young boy who grows up in and around the title village movie theater in this Italian comedy drama that is based on the life and times of screenwriter/director Giuseppe Tornatore. The story begins in the present as a Sicilian mother pines for her estranged son, Salvatore, who left many years ago and has since become a prominent Roman film director who has taken the advice of his mentor too literally. He finally returns to his home village to attend the funeral of the town's former film projectionist, Alfredo, and, in so doing, embarks upon a journey into his boyhood just after WWII when he became the man's official son. In the dark confines of the Cinema Paradiso, the boy and the other townsfolk try to escape from the grim realities of post-war Italy. The town censor is also there to insure nothing untoward appears onscreen, invariably demanding that all kissing scenes be edited out. One day, Salvatore saves Alfredo's life after a fire, and then becomes the new projectionist. A few years later, Salvatore falls in love with a beautiful girl who breaks his heart after he is inducted into the military. Thirty years later, Salvatore has come to say goodbye to his life-long friend, who has left him a little gift in a film can.

The film was remade in Tamil with some nativity touch as "Veyil"

2. THE WAY HOME (2002)

Another Korean movie. But the language doesn't matter to watch this kind of movies. You can realize this when you finish watching. It has very few dialogues and less conversation. It is a story (near real life experience in modern world) between a boy and his grandmother. This boy is from city (urban background) and his grandmother lives in a remote hilly area. Initially he doesn't like that place and his grandmother, who is dumb. Finally how he gets changed (Metamorphosis) is the story. He couldn't bear the separation from his grandmother at the end. I simply loved the wonderful location in this film. There are few incidents in this film which portrays the humanistic nature and unconditional love. How simple and straight forward their life is.

A Must Watch..

3. CHILDREN OF HEAVEN (1997)

The story line is simple. Ali lost his sister's shoes in a market. He could not find them after searching. Since they are poor, they don't want to tell their father about this and starts sharing the brother's shoes (School timings are different for boys and girls). When they come to know the shoe is with another girl, they don't want to ask her after seeing her family's condition. Ali helps his father in doing some gardening work for earning money. At that time he tells his father that new shoes has to be bought for his sister. His father confirms that.Ali participates in a race where the third prize is a pair of shoe. Does he wins the race and the girl gets a new shoe? Beautiful screenplay, acting by the kids.
Watch it..

4. North by North West (1959)

Alfred Hitchcock master piece….While having lunch at the Plaza Hotel in New York, advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) has the bad luck to call for a messenger just as a page goes out for a "George Kaplan." From that moment, Thornhill finds that he has stepped into a nightmare -- he is quietly abducted by a pair of armed men out of the hotel's famous Oak Room and transported to a Long Island estate; there, he is interrogated by a mysterious man (James Mason) who, believing that Roger is George Kaplan, demands to know what he knows about his business and how he has come to acquire this knowledge. Roger, who knows nothing about who any of these people are, can do nothing but deny that he is Kaplan or that he knows what they're talking about. Finally, his captors force a bottle of bourbon into Roger and put him behind the wheel of a car on a dangerous downhill stretch. Through sheer luck and the intervention of a police patrol car and its driver (John Beradino), Roger survives the ride and evades his captors, and is booked for drunk driving. He's unable to persuade the court, the county detectives, or even his own mother (Jesse Royce Landis) of the truth of his story, however -- Thornhill returns with them to the mansion where he was held, only to find any incriminating evidence cleaned up and to learn that the owner of the house is a diplomat, Lester Townsend (Philip Ober), assigned to the United Nations. He backtracks to the hotel to find the room of the real George Kaplan, only to discover that no one at the hotel has ever actually seen the man. With his kidnappers once again pursuing him, Thornhill decides to confront Townsend at the United Nations, only to discover that he knows nothing of the events on Long Island, or his house being occupied -- but before he can learn more, Townsend gets a knife in his back in full view of 50 witnesses who believe that Roger did it. Now on the run from a murder charge, complete with a photograph of him holding the weapon plastered on the front page of every newspaper in the country, Thornhill tries to escape via train -- there he meets the cooly beautiful Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint), who twice hides him from the police, once spontaneously and a second time in a more calculated rendezvous in her compartment that gets the two of them together romantically, at least for the night. By the next day, he's off following a clue to a remote rural highway, where he is attacked by an armed crop-dusting plane, one of the most famous scenes in Hitchcock's entire film output. Thornhill barely survives, but he does manage to learn that his mysterious tormentor/interrogator is named Phillip Vandamm, and that he goes under the cover of being an art dealer and importer/exporter, and that Eve is in bed with him in every sense of the phrase -- or is she?

5. CAST AWAY (2000)

Tom Hanks does a superb job of carrying "Cast Away" all by himself for about two-thirds of its running time, but isn't much helped by additional characters in the opening and closing sequences. Here is a strong and simple story surrounded by needless complications, and flawed by a last act that first disappoints us and then ends on a note of forced whimsy.

Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a time-obsessed Federal Express executive who troubleshoots all over the world, arranging hurry-up package transfers in Moscow before flying off to solve problems in Asia. Helen Huntplays his fiancee, Kelly Frears, who tries her best to accept a man ruled by a beeper. She comes from clock-watching stock, and for Christmas gives Chuck her grandfather's railroad watch.

Noland hitches a ride on a FedEx flight across the Pacific, which is blown off course before crashing after an onboard explosion. That seems like two catastrophes when one would have done, but director Bob Zemeckis uses the storm for scenes of in-flight fear, wisely following Alfred Hitchcock's observation that from a suspense point of view, an explosion is over before you get your money's worth.

A must watch for movie lovers.. Thanks to Ulaga Cinema part 1,2,3 By Chezian (Vikatan Publications Chennai) for introducing this movies in their articles.

I'd rather not be Anna ARUNDHATI ROY/ஒலிக்கும் அருந்ததி ராயின் எதிர்ப்புக் குரல்!

Most sensible article by Arundhati Roy in a very long time. Most people that I know are shocked by what is being dished out in the 24-hour English news channels for the past one week and the way they are trying to whip up the passions of the ignorant. The channels seem to be disconnected with the real people of India and have acquired a voice of their own. There is no debate whatsover on the merits or demerits of each version of the Lokpal Bill and its long term impact on the country. Yet to see any intellectuals or nationalists come out strongly in support of this bill. Anna's Lokpal can only be another white elephant on the country and one more government organ which is also susceptible to corruption. Instead of saving the country from corruption, the Lokpal will make it only worse. 'Law Enforcement' has always been India's perennial problem and not the lack of laws. No one has the right to dictate terms or blackmail the govt. into accepting their demands without having a debate.

Anna's team can do a better job in strengthening the institutions of our country and attack corruption at its lowest level (at the point of interaction). It's Sad, but the truth is that the society is being 'predictably irrational' and digging their way into oblivion.

Anna Hazare- Unwanted hype!? Gnani Sankaran

It was fashionable to be patriotic during Kargil war and now it is fashionable to be fighters against corruption thanks to Anna Hazare.

Within two days of the fast of veteran gandhian’s understandable ire against delay in creating a lok pal act, the English media channels and their partners – in- arms English print media have created a pseudo war against corruption in India, with middle and upper middle classes suddenly waking up their consciences through candle light walks.

Dear pseudo comrades, have you heared of Irom Sharmila , fasting not for one or two days, but a full decade, with absolutely no media hype to create a single candle light walk by the rich and the affluent of India.

Lend your ears not to me, friends, Indians and countrymen, but to Irom Sharmila, a fellow Indian like Anna hazare. Unfortunately she is from Manipur, which many of us in south and western India confuse with Manipal where money gets education and again unfortunately in Manipur , even money cannot guarantee you your life.

Here is a quick recap on Irom Sharmila, for the sake of latecomers to public causes. Assam Rifles one of the Indian para military forces under whose control Manipur is, gunned down ten people waiting for bus at a bus stop in Malom in Imphal valley on November 1,2000. While the army claimed that it fired against insurgents , other eye witness accounts challenged that. The killed included an old woman.

On November 4, Irom Sharmila a 28 year old girl started a fast unto death demanding repeal of the armed forces special powers act of 1958 which empowered the army to kill without being questioned. She was arrested for attempting to commit suicide and force fed by tubes. For the last ten years, the government repeats the farce of arresting her on the same charge every year, after a formal release for a day or two. This is because the very charge of attempt to suicide does not entail imprisonment of more than one year even if convicted. Irom Sharmila continues to be under arrest till date and is being forcefed.

In 2004, Thangjam Manorama, another Manipuri girl was found dead, brutally killed by the Indian army and this led to hundreds of women protesting ourside army headquarters in Imphal. Forty women, young and old went naked with placards demanding “Indian army, rape us.”

And Irom Sharmila continued to fast under arrest, while rest of India has been merrily carrying on with regular elections and cricket. (If Anna Hazare had been on fast during semi finals and finals of world cup , the media would have blissfully ignored him. Timing, my dear friends, Indians and countrymen, is very very important in politics and media. Remember that if Government of India has taken 42 years to draft a Lokpal bill, Anna Hazare also has taken so long to launch a fast unto death on that demand.)

Except for customary casual and superficial mention about Irom Sharmila in their news bulletins whenever an Arundhathi Roy or Mahaswetha devi mentioned her, the entire Indian media has ignored her. Why ? Simple, my dear watsons, it is unpatriotic to question the army or criticize it, even though it may be as corrupt as our politicians and even more brutal than them.

A government bullying its own citizens of an entire state with its army is worse than corruption. This has been going on in North east irrespective of which party holds power in Delhi. The candle vigilantes of the educated middle, upper middle and rich dare not take up issues of human rights violations, or adivasis’ traditional right violations. It is the easiest option to shout from the rooftops about corruption while being part of the very same corrupt system in day to day life. And the politician is the favourite whipping boy for these classes.

And is corruption in India waiting only for one single Lok pal bill at the centre to throw it out in entirety ? No. Anna hazare’s fast is only for drafting of a water tight bill which would take atleast three to four months, even if the committee of his choice works on it. And once the bill becomes the act, it does not dent corruption a bit unless it is enforced. Enforecement is the responsibility of the same corrupt machinery and system we havc.

And remember we already have enough laws to book the corrupt politicians and public servants. Whatever cases that remain in court against a Lalu Prasad yadav or Jayalalitha or Madhu Koda or Ramalinga Raju or Ketan Desai have been booked under the existing well framed laws.

What we really need is not just a new law but only a honest enforcemenet machinery to implement the best constitution in the world. And such a machinery also unfortunately has to come only from the educated middle, upper middle and rich classes because it is these classes that have produced, protected and perpetuated the existing dishonest enforcement system.

What we need is therefore not a candle light rally around the half dead Anna Hazare but a protest rally outside the houses of auditors, lawyers, doctors and teachers whop have corrupted oru system blaming everything on an imaginary uneducated politician. But lo, they are an indistinguishable but inseperable part of the cacophony of the pseudo war against corruption.

I wish before his martyrdom, someone would first educate Anna Hazare about a place called Manipur and an unsung heroine called Irom Sharmila.
